i just bought 20yds of merino pencil roving greens from ebay. it's absolutely gorgeous! however, i am dumb and had no idea how much twenty yards would be, so, having planned to make a handbag with the masses of yarn that i expected, i now need an idea of what to do with it. i was thinking maybe a funky headband or a classy change purse. what ( Read more... )

You might want to try thrummed mittens. (Those are mittens that have bits of roving knit in, so they are lined with it on the inside.) I've never made those myself, so I'm not sure what type of yardage of roving they take. But I bet you could find some patterns if you do web searches. I tried on a thrummed mitten at my LYS and it was wonderfully soft and warm. :-)

ooh, they sound interesting... it's getting to summer (or trying to) but it would be nice to have some pretty mittens ready for winter. thanks

There's a thrum FAQ here: http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/thrumfaq.html

it leads to a pattern here http://www.wool-tyme.com/mittens.html which calls for about 60 g of carded fleece or roving for the thrums. How much does your 20 yds weigh?

An alternative would be to use it as trim for a hat. Starting at the cuff, cast on and knit with the roving until it runs out and then switch to a complimentary color for the rest of the hat. You could let it naturally curl for a rolled brim (do stockinette, just knit) or do a ribbing.

Or divide it in half and do the same thing for mittens, start at the cuff and knit until it runs out or the cuff is done.

thanks! they're really good ideas! i was trying to think of a small project that would only need as much of the wool as i have, but it's an excellent idea to incorporate it into a bigger project!
