Seb was aware that it was late and that mother and baby needed their rest too. But he knew that Charli didn't have any family left to visit, to give encouraging words and welcome the baby to the world. In the morning, everyone would be lining up to see, but Seb knew that right now could feel so scary and lonely for such a young mother.
He put his head quietly around the door, a sheepish smile on his face.

When the door opened, she glanced up, offering a sleepy smile to Seb. "Hi."

He lingered in the doorway, his hand clutching the doorhandle. "I was was wondering if you wanted any visitors? I can go if you want to be alone..."

By the time he made it back to the property, no one was around camp. It scared him at first, but then he noticed how the house seemed completely illuminated from the inside and alarms went crazy inside his head. He knew right away. Hell, he'd been thinking about when Charli would be due to, barely hours ago. Could it be a coincidence? Was his child being born just as he thought about it?
He rushed into the house, the little dirt on him making him feel filthy as Patricia led him to the main bedroom.
There they were. Beautiful. Surrounded by a light of their own, in this shitty, new dark world.

She was close to sleep when she heard the footsteps. Two sets. The lighter of the two she had a feeling was Patricia, once again coming to check on her. Fighting back the hope that blossomed, Charli sat up, trying not to jostle the infant too much and ignoring the ache moving caused.
She held her breath, waiting until the door opened.

His tiny, barely a little person, baby.
His feet were not s doubtful as his words, and in a blink he was by her side, towering over them both. He only caught a glance of that wrinkly, red face, but it was enough to make his heart hammer his ribcage.
"Sorry I wasn't here." He genuinelly apologised, his hand falling on Charli's shoulder and giving it a gentle squeeze.

As if sensing his father's presence, the baby begins to squirm, soft almost-cries filling the quiet of the room, and for the first time since it all happened, the fear didn't fill her like it had. She let's out a watery laugh at his apology. "You should be. Shoulda been your hand I almost broke." But the smile doesn't leave her face.
