It is believed that when you die, your life passes before your eyes.
For John Smith, it was no more than the events of the previous two hours.
"You're not John Smith. You're called the Doctor. The man in your journal, he's real. He's you."
"Have you enjoyed it, Doctor? Being human? Has it taught you wonderful things, are you better, richer, wiser? Then let's see you answer this. Which one of them do you want us to kill? Maid or matron? Your friend - or your lover?"
"This whole life of yours, it's made up! That's the fantasy! All we need to do is find that fob watch and we can turn you back."
"Into what?"
"The Doctor."
"And what would he do?"
"He'd save us."
"I'm John Smith, that's all I want to be, John Smith. With his life... and his job... and his love. Why can't I be John Smith? Isn't he a good man? Why can't I stay?"
"But we need the Doctor."
"Who am I then? Nothing...? I'm just a story?"
"I must go to them. Before anyone else dies."
"You can't. Martha, there must be something you can do."
"Not without the watch."
"You're this Doctor's companion, can't you help? What exactly do you do for him? Why does he need you?"
"Because he's lonely."
"And that's what you want me to become?"
"He's... like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night, and the storm in the heart of the sun."
"Stop it."
"He's ancient and forever. He burns at the center of time and he can see the turn of the universe."
"Stop it! I said stop it."
"And... he's wonderful."
"Can you hear it?"
"It's asleep. Waiting to waken."
"Why did he speak to me?"
"Oh, low level telepathic field, you were born with it. Just an extra-synaptic engram causing-
Is that how he talks?"
"If I could do this instead of you, then I would. I had hoped... but my hopes aren’t important."
"He won’t love you."
"If he’s not you, then I don’t want him to."
"What are you going to do?"
