Ron's frown turned into a scowl at what she was suggesting. Again.

"We've been down this road before, Hermione. We're not going to finish anything because you told me... Hell, come to think of it, you promised me... on my bloody birthday of all days that you would let Harry go this time!" And having (for once) actually listened very intently, he was completely sure of what she'd said; her words repeating themselves inside his head:

"I'm stopping, Ron. He's gone. And I should accept that."

Rolling onto his back, he scrubbed a hand in frustration across his face, trying to rein in his temper because it was far too early to get into a shouting match with his girlfriend.

"Let him have the only thing we could properly give him." Staring at the ceiling, his tone was now gentler, and more weary. "His rest."

Hermione sat up, ignoring the state of blankets or lack of clothing or anything. She looked down at Ron.

"And what are we to do then? Just wait for them to find us? They'll kill us before they lock us away..."

Kill them like they killed Moody. She'd see their bodies, his body, thrown back, cast down, put on display...

She didn't know how to convince him of what she believed in her heart. And what she believed was that despite wanting to let him go. Wanting to let him rest. They needed Harry. They needed him more than ever.

"I can't." She looked away and clasped her hands tightly in her lap. "I can't lose anyone else. I'll understand if you don't want to be a part of what we need to go ahead with, but where on earth is our alternative?"

"Like they won't make a beeline to us once word gets out - and you know it will - that Harry is alive?" Ron shot back, already feeling the high spots of colour burning his cheeks.

So many ways this harebrained scheme could go wrong. What if it didn't work? What if, during the resurrection, something went horribly wrong? Could they live with themselves if such a thing happened?

And the one variable in this whole stupid strategy that kept him awake more nights than he cared to ever count.

"How can you be so certain he'll be able to finish off Voldemort if we bring him back?" Ron knew he was playing both a Doubting Thomas and devil's advocate by posing this particular line of questioning, but he also knew that he simply couldn't bear losing Harry a second time.

Keeping her voice low, she wasn't going to scream this argument at him, she turned her head away and stared at a crack in the wall. What was the use yelling if it only served to make both of them dig in their heels?

"I can't be certain of anything, Ron," Hermione said softly. "I won't be certain of anything anymore. My certainty gets people killed." The churning in her stomach caused Hermione to pause. She pressed her lips together in a thin line and took a few slow breaths through her nose.

"All we're doing is pecking away at Voldemort and his regime. Hallowe'en was an annoyance to them. Rescuing Luna was a minor event. Azkaban was their win. We're getting nowhere fast because none of us are willing to go up against Voldemort. So it's either try with this opportunity that Harry left for us. Let him try a second time... and don't for a moment believe that we will let him go up against Voldemort on his own because I'll be hanged if he acts like the sacrificial lamb twice... or we throw in the towel and give up on England because we ( ... )

Ron didn't say anything for the longest time as he contemplated what she'd said, tapping out an erratic beat on his stomach with blunt fingertips as he did so. Both of them had their reasons for and against executing such a plan. Both opinions were right, and thus making everything all the more difficult.

Turning his head just enough to look at Hermione's face, now showing the rigors of too much worry and not enough sleep, he solemnly asked, "You're not going to budge on this, are you?"

Of course she wasn't. That's what made her who she was - headstrong as an ox and just as bold. Two qualities that most assuredly got her Sorted into their House and not the more scholarly Ravenclaws; though his school days would have been filled with a lot less nagging about his study habits if she had ( ... )
