So here I am, reading up on the new measures I'm including in my prelim project, and the first sentence of one of the articles is:

"Only a century ago, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and diarrhea were the leading causes of death."Ok, I'll give you tuberculosis and pneumonia. Tuberculosis was like an epidemic back then, and pneumonia is still killing ( Read more... )

Actually, diarrhea was a major problem in the past. During Gettysburg General Lee wasn't there to give the orders for Picket's charge because he was off hiding in the woods with what a friend of mine refers to as "the shits." She interned at Gettysburg a few years back so she knows that info pretty well. I would agree that the major problem was probably related to the dehydration and the way that it contaminated the drinking water making everyone in the area sick.

Yeah, it seems more like dehydration or whatever the virus was causing it should be the "leading cause of death" rather than the diarrhea.
