Srsly?

So here I am, reading up on the new measures I'm including in my prelim project, and the first sentence of one of the articles is:

"Only a century ago, tuberculosis, pneumonia, and diarrhea were the leading causes of death."

Ok, I'll give you tuberculosis and pneumonia. Tuberculosis was like an epidemic back then, and pneumonia is still killing people left and right. But, diarrhea? Can you honestly tell me that 100 years ago people were shitting themselves to death?

I'll go out on a limb and guess that the diarrhea is related to some severe dehydration (seems more plausible than just shitting until you die) or something, but 3rd leading cause of death? Probably only because we hadn't figured out all the different kinds of cancer yet.
