OOC: Stop it, please, we're not in junior high

Jan 23, 2008 11:35

To whomever is spamming my IM address with the news that my friends pages have been hacked then taking me to a spam site, please stop. It isn't funny and it's irritating. Also, it has a very short list of who it could be since the two journals do not RP at the same spot. I leave my contact information up as a courtesy because I think people can act ( Read more... )

Your journal shows up in google. Spammers automate it -- scrape the profile, ping the IM account with the spam link, do it a few million times. It's unlikely it's someone you know.

(If you followed links, you should run an up-to-date virus and mal/spyware checker.)

I'd believe that if I didn't have extremely up to date virus protection. It updates daily. And it's happened on the same journal three times, the other journal only once.

Virus protection doesn't stop people spamming you.

*shrug* I've minimized the search results for google too. I'm covering all my bases. The two of my seven or so RP accounts rp accounts that have been pinged share people in the overall sites and a couple have access to this journal's friends lock.If it's spam bots fine. If it's them I want it stopped.

I've had that problem with journals before, too. Are you using Norton?

Your journal still shows up on Google, BTW, if you tried covering your bases. The one thing I've found that is the worst are memes, though. Certain ones that ask for email addresses, etc. I had to change my email for 4 of them because the spam I got from one of the memes was so bad.

I use something my roomie's tech-savy boyfriend loaded up for me. Had Macafee didn't like it.

I never do memes that require my email address, and I have a spam address should I need to do that. And it's on two specific journals, one of which I've had for around a year, and only has been getting the spam since I joined it with a different RP, and this one has gotten it three times. I'm suspicious, since of the seven or eight, only two have been hit, and they only share a couple people who'd be able to both link them, and get into the flocked posts of this one.

How does this happen? I've heard that there are a lot of people that are getting hacked into and that LJ has IP addresses. What does that mean? How can I find out if people are trying to do funny things into my journal?

I'm so confused on how all of this works.

I'm about the last person to ask. I pretty much suck at all things technical. I can only just manage basic html. As far as IP addresses go, if you turn on your comment settings to track everyone's IP, you can see who's got the same addresses, so if someone's spamming your journal, you can tell if it's a certain person, whether they're posting from one journal or another, I think? I dunno, I only allow registered users onto my RP journals anyway.

Me too. Oh, I see. I should test that out or something.

It's really not that interesting, I must leave it on as a reflex, since I have my regular journal open to anonymous comments. I've looked at the IP addresses once or twice but all I see is really long string of numbers.
