I think it is geared toward hooking up employees and those in the service industry with bonuses and stuff like that. Also something about giving food and clothing to the less fortunate.

It was originally a day to give gifts to employees and members of lower social classes. When I was a child, it was more common to mark the day with sales and sporting events.
