Good for you! Congratulations on being on a board, it sounds like a great idea that will really help the handicapped. Volunteering at farms to start out with is a good idea too, all that fresh air and hard work will help those with disabilities feel better about themselves and more accomplished, I think. Keep us updated on how it goes!
That's really awesome - there's a center kind of like that out in colorado somewhere. It started off as a therapeutic riding center (I think) but has grown with other animals and plants. I think they focus more on youth and at risk but I'm not sure - I just remember hearing the lady give a talk.
Check in with local Day-hab programs and see what sort of plant-based activities they're doing. I imagine it would be relatively easy to teach participants to do yard work of some sort--weeding, especially--or raking, mowing, etc. depending on functioning level. Just make sure that your board has some sort of indemnity insurance to protect you, as a board member, from any personal liability arising from agency activities. A licensed independent social worker can train/supervise others to provide CPST services, which most MR/DD folks will qualify for under Medicaid to provide additional revenues. If all else fails, a greenhouse would be a good start.
