Superman/Batman, Protector/Defender

Recently I've been having a lot of conversations about whether or not Superman, as he was conceived, is a viable hero for a post modern aged so steeped in irony that we practically sneeze Devo videos. I find a lot to disagree with in the article. Interesting definitions, however flawed though. The failure of the system to describe Spider-man is definitive ( ... )

With Superman and the human experience, I can't help but think about one thing: his intelligence. Even though he had the most traditional, if not entirely normal, upbringing, the ability to not only process, but wholly comprehend actions on a global - in some cases galactic - scale automatically sets him apart from any other person he comes in contact with. Even in basic things, like seeing the political ramifications of any elections outcome, the average person in Smallville doesn't have the cognitive function or desire to understand all of that ( ... )

Interesting. I do appreciate the fact that Protector and Anti Hero aren't the same thing. It feels like a lot of people consider some of those Protectors as anti-heroes, and really, that's not the case.

I'm glad he pointed out the more cynical worlds too.
