Superman/Batman, Protector/Defender

Recently I've been having a lot of conversations about whether or not Superman, as he was conceived, is a viable hero for a post modern aged so steeped in irony that we practically sneeze Devo videos. I happen to be a Batman girl, but I absolutely see value in having someone iconic, albeit significantly removed from the human experience, as a part of the comic/hero landscape, be it in printed, animated, or live form. I've had such a hard time articulating why he's still important, especially since most of the time I'm defending characters I love like Deadpool and Rorschach. Then I found the following article:

Nerd Rage #5: Superman/Batman, Protector/Defender

What do you think about it? I like the idea of having the binary of protector/defender as a standard, because it's finally an acknowledgment that there are clear demarcations between how each hero chooses to execute his/her quest for justice and it explains in very clear terms why certain people will never truly be exactly on the same side, even if they have identical end results. It also proves that there is not only room in the world for each kind, but also that having both is a necessity for survival.

The Anti-Hero stuff is hilarious and true, but they don't need as much definition to be understood. ;) The checklist, however, is awesome.

So, thoughts?

(Also, he has great articles worth checking about Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown that made me very happy, if you're of a mind.)
