They stopped giving him paper weeks ago. He hasn't noticed. His rooms were modified, carefully painted with wards and imbued with magic sapping materials. He hasn't noticed that, either. Magic, someone in another realm would be quick to point out, is all about confidence. Loki has confidence in spades, wheel barrels, and Volkwagons. He reached for a paper where there should not be and plucked parchment from the air.

He licks the pen, cutting his tongue on the too-sharp edge, and begins to write.

It's an important list. An important part of him, to him, with redredred ink.

Why I am a God
1. I exist.
2. I survived.
3. I am not Aesir.
4. I am not Jotunn.
5. I cannot die.

The magic swirled around his fingers as the healer knocked at his door, entering with the blank, controlled expression of determination. "Prince Loki..."

"Shh." Loki whispered, transmuting the pen to a knife. "Stronger than swords, you know."

#-- : Why
1. Worthless

This is an important list. It needs to be kept somewhere safe. Somewhere he will remember. So in the dark of the night by candlelight , shadows licking at his bare feet, he stands in front of the mirror and begins to carve.

Neat little letters, evenly spaced, as straight as he can make them as they warp across his ribs.

You are not loved because
1. Your father abandoned you to die
2. Your second father has a better son
3. You are a monster
4. You are worthless
5. You are nothing

He keeps running the tip of the quill across the letters, over and over until he's sure that they will scar, huffing in pain as he scratches the sharpened tip over bone. He wipes away the blood and stares at his reflection.

He's made sure to write it mirrored so he can read it in the mirror. Just one more list, just one more. And if tears roll down his cheeks, nobody is there to notice.

You cannot be loved because
1. You are LokiThere. He dabs off the blood and admires his work ( ... )
