Skipping Stones
The beach is cold that morning. The sand is wet. The spray is biting.
She hikes up her dress and carries her slippers in one hand. Most unladylike. Her bare ankles and feet remind him of gypsies.
She keeps looking towards the horizon, looking for the black sails he hopes will never arrive.

Passover
Elizabeth doesn't believe in miracles, but thanks God when she wakes to find the sheets stained with blood.
James too breathes a sigh of relief.

Momentum
She always catches him gazing out to sea in the evenings. He puts down the reports, the letters, the maps and paces before the window. To and fro, to and fro, like a clock.
He seems to burn with a feral energy and darkness.
She asks, "What are you searching for?"
He calms, a smile on his lips. "Pirates, of course."
