Title: King of Hearts
Author: ash_night
Pairing: James/Elizabeth (Will/Elizabeth subtext)
Rating: PG-13 (for adult themes)
Genre: Romance, Angst, AU
Summary: Set immediately after Ghosts. A short continuation of the conversation concerning Will and marriage.
Disclaimer: Disney owns all. Me, nothing.
A/N: No DMC spoilers. Reading Ghosts is recommended, along with The Cheshire Cat. Obviously I need to come up with a series title *hint hint*. Thank you for all the reviews. They feed me like you wouldn't believe. And yes there is more, although the churning gets harder.

---

This is the second time that he sees her cry. The specter of that damned Turner lingers long after his absence.

He holds her and mumbles the thousand and one platitudes he knows into her hair that smells like cinnamon and flowers. She is so young that it makes his bones ache.

He wants her to never cry again, wants that Turner boy to swing in the gallows, wants the thousand and one things he knows are impossible. He doesn't stop wanting, doesn't believe he will ever stop wanting.

---

She feels older than her eighteen years and looks mournfully at the two ruined handkerchiefs, hers and his.

"Why did you marry me?" Her simple understanding of honor meant that she was unsuitable for marriage.

"I love you." Only his eyes betray the ferocity of emotion behind those simple words.

---

Like a blundering child, she says, "But I might be --"

"Elizabeth," he says firmly. "I love you." I won't leave you.

Besides, he can't stand to hear the words that might be true.

Finally, she nods and understands.

---

She watches him fall asleep, waits for the rise and fall of his chest to slow.

When he is asleep, she draws open the curtains, expecting moonlight and stars. Instead, there is only the death-silent darkness of heavy clouds.

It rains throughout the night.

A/N: Yes I know that was short. Pardon me, and unfortunately the next ficlet is extremely short. However, I am currently wrangling with a lengthy ficlet that will seem like a novella compared to the ones I've written so far.
