How Not to be Fluffy

Thou shalt not steal from other cultures.
Thou shalt not believe the historical claims of oral tradition.
Thou shalt not take the names of William Blake, Elias Lönnrot, Austin Osman Spare, J.R.R. Tolkien, Doreen Valiente, Terence McKenna, or Andrew Chumbley in vain.
Thou shalt not believe that anyone under the age of 30 is an elder: some people are ( Read more... )

I love that song :)

Agree with about 90% of your lines,

Watching Buffy is perfectly acceptable! Using it as a template for your new “Wiccan” tradition will result in others laughing and pointing.

Thou shalt not make up a religion just because you like being flogged.

But it's traditional!

Thou shalt not refer to yourself as Wiccan unless you've been initiated by one.

*Sigh* Sadly, I think it's a bit late for that one.

But, like, it's spelled faerie. And, like, everyone is a Wiccan. It's like, the new Christian. God. Get over yourself, totally.

I have to agree with much of what you've said, but sadly, I disagree with the "fam trad" thing. It's actually pretty funny, because I am "fam trad", and most of my friends knew my grandfather. We have non-religious family traditions that, when looked at a little closer, has many pagan overtures (even though Poppi was Lutheran.)It's all agrarian stuff based around life on the farm, planting, harvest, cleaning out the trash after winter or harvest. Nothing "special" that other farm families weren't doing, we just had more fun at it or made it a community thing. A lot of the stuff is sympathetic stuff like dream candles and Yule bread. But I never claimed that it was a religion, it's just something we (the whole family and much of his former community) do.

So, I'm not offended or anything, but I just find it funny that so many people say "Fam trad" is a no, no, when everyone has some kind of family tradition.

I wanna preface my statement by saying that I am not a member of any fam trad, but I would like to say that it is currently possible for *some* people to come from a fam trad. Gardner claims he was initiated in 1939 if I recall correctly and the witchcraft laws were repealed in 1951 in England.

If you look at these numbers you can see that if a priest and a priestess started a family about the time that the witchcraft laws were repealed, and raised their children in the craft, their children would have likely of had children about 1970 give or take a couple years. And if those children grew up and had more children say about 1990 or so, theoretically you could have a fam trad that stretches back only 50 years buts comprises three generations, with a 4th on the way.

This is all in theory of course. I have never actually met anyone who claims to come from a fam trad that could actually show me something besides there parents immediate parents.

I personally know a three generation fam trad (well, two now that the grandmother - my original HPS - has passed on).
