How Not to be Fluffy

Apr 27, 2007 02:04

Thou shalt not steal from other cultures.
Thou shalt not believe the historical claims of oral tradition.
Thou shalt not take the names of William Blake, Elias Lönnrot, Austin Osman Spare, J.R.R. Tolkien, Doreen Valiente, Terence McKenna, or Andrew Chumbley in vain.
Thou shalt not believe that anyone under the age of 30 is an elder: some people are ( Read more... )

...and, thou shalt not parrot any of the above without thinking, smug in the knowledge that this makes thee* non-fluffy. If fluffiness were as simple as reading the wrong books, and non-fluffiness guaranteed through pouring scorn in the right direction, the distinction would be a bloody useless one.

;)

*I really don't know how pseudo-archaic works. Shrug.

Thy use of "thee" is correctly done for archaic. Pseudo archaic worketh as the speaker liketh, so there be neither "correct" nor "incorrect;" there be merely different degrees of "annoying."

I'd have to take issue with many of your 'suggestions'. To wit:

Thou shalt not steal from other cultures.
I assume you live in a vacuum? Modern culture steals extensively from whatever ethnic group happens to be hanging around, and there's very few 'pure' languages on the planet, either. (If you're a Navajo, I might cut you some slack on that last one.) There's nothing wrong with picking and choosing things from other cultures that speak to you. One should, however, be cognizant of one's level of understanding, and not represent oneself as a voice for that culture, if one is not a member.

Thou shalt not question Ronald Hutton.

I've spoken with Dr. Hutton in a scholar's forum. He's a human being who is not immune from error. It's a terrible mistake to hold anyone up as exempt from questioning - especially an academic.

Thou shalt not watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer.Excuse me? What does my television viewing have to do with my religious practices? Yes, I watch BtVS, and the rest of Joss Whedon's shows, as well. (Name any other horror/ ( ... )

Although I agree with most of your reposte (some NFPs seems to have a need to disapprove of others, whatever they do) I feel the need to query something.

my devotion to Herne was no less valid because it was offered directly and spontaneously to him (when He appeared to me in the woods, back when I was 8.

I take it you are aware that Herne is not a god. Although the Robin of Sherwood TV programme cast him as such, he was never deified. he is actually a ghost more than anything, who represents the Hunt on windy nights. Before the RoS TV series, no-one outside Berkshire (apart from historians and scholars) had even heard of him.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with dedicating yourself to a ghost, but most people go for gods. I am aware that Murray connected him to Cernunnos so maybe that is where you got that from.

He's never offered His name to me. I settled on 'Herne' because it (roughly) means 'horned', and because it provides a commonly understood reference point.

Wait a minnit!

The Book Of The SubGenius is not a mere book: It is an excursion into a neighboring parallel universe, a portal to a place that will crack your skull open like a coconut, suck out the insides, and refill it with antimatter. To call it a mere book is, well- right, because it does do a very clever job at disguising itself as a fairly harmless tome...

I'm feeling rather nauseous. I can't think of anything more fluffy than this post, with all its "thou shalts." Give me a break. Apparently the author of this post doesn't want others to think for themselves, much.

I think it's meant to be taken not only with a great deal of salt but your irony meter turned to 11.

I think it's a filk of the song/music video listed as "current music". The song is very amusing and eminently filk-worthy.

Thou shalt not use spells, rituals or magic to get into anyone's pants.
Fixed it for ya (chiks doing it too is part of why people think it'll work on chiks, and then I have to beat them with sticks. So sad!).

Also:
Thou shalt not return to the same open circle or ritual month in, month out just 'cause you once saw someone there that you fancied but you're never gonna fucking talk to.
I've heard too many (gay male) Feri people complain about this ;P.
