Oh dear. It seems to be my birthday again.

...

I'm just glad grandfather doesn't really do birthdays.

And that I don't have some prince over-eager to throw me a party.

Though...I suppose this does mean I can treat myself to chocola-- [sigh] when we get back from chasing monster smugglers ( Read more... )

that time again already?, getting away for a while, what is it now?, i'm only good at time when i control it, chocolates--without nougat, being useful

There's a child aboard this ship who needs an instructor. If deemed acceptable by the captain, I can arrange regular wages for you.

I thought I'd heard rumors. How old is she and do you know what she's already been taught?

The girl in question is Matilda Wormwood, and she's twelve years old. Don't let the age fool you, however; she's quite bright for someone so young. As for her current knowledge, she's been educated in language, writing, protocol, history, mathematics up to pre-calculus, physics and some of the other sciences.

Very good, it sounds like she's been adequately taught thus far, no nonsense about not teaching children higher maths or anything.

Very well, I will take the girl as my charge.

Of course, Bidoof. Lessons in what, in particular? I must confess, I know very little about carpentry.

Can I have lessons in Everything? I don't know much about about carpentry either! But that's why I do my best to learn more, by golly!

Oh, wow. A teacher. I thought I actually had some competition for a second there.

Being a teacher a more than adequate position, after all, one must know to impart knowledge.

And 'teacher' is only one of my titles.

Yeah, it's a great job. For ugly people.

What are your other titles? I bet you play some stupid instrument. Ugly people do that kind of thing so people will find them interesting.

Well we can't be too terribly ugly. People pay to sit in front of us for hours at a time, after all.

How remiss of you, you haven't even asked my name. But no, I don't play any musical instruments, you're wrong there.
