Ooh. That's where we're going to go with this episode. It's a tough one all around for everyone involved! It's the start of Noah's surgery and all does not go according to plan. Dun ... dun ... DUN
( Read more... )
It's kind of funny that the only half-assed apology Luke gets from Noah is on threat of death or more serious injury. That's the only time when he feels the need to say something. Which he doesn't even say. In fact, he "doesn't know what to say".
Right? I have a few suggestions, Noah!
Did they stop to think that he's a socially awkward doctor who is extremely stand-offish, and it takes him a while to develop friendships and get used to living in a town he was blackmailed into? That maybe he was human all along, and now that he's more comfortable around them, he's dropping the doctor act? It's easy to talk about work. It's not easy to socialize.
I'm going to be honest, I hate this episode. I really do. I hate the surgery, I hate that dream sequence thing, I hate the verbal spar between Reid and Chris. The Katie/Luke scene is its only saving grace in my eyes.
You know, for a major surgery in the middle of a love triangle, it was a boring episode. That's probably another reason why I hate it. Gah, I don't like to think about this one too much.
"Dr. Oliver," Luke said, following Reid out of the hospital room. "Dr. Oliver. Wait..............REID!"
Reid turned around. "What?
Luke looked at him and let out a shakey breath. "Don't do that..."
"Don't do what?"
Luke continued to look at Reid but didn't know what to say, so instead he stepped forward and wrapped his arms around Reid's shoulders hugging him close.
Reid's arm came up, and he awkwardly patting Luke's back. "Mr. Snyder, what are you..."
"Good luck," Luke whispered, kissing Reid's temple before releasing him and walking away.
Reid watched Luke walk away from him and sighed. He looked over to see two nurses staring at him. He ran a hand through his hair and continued on his way to the operating room.

Reid scrubbed in, methodically counting the scrubs to each finger of each hand.
Why does he have to smell so good?
And what the hell was the meaning of that hug? A hug? Really? He hugged me. People do not hug me.
After the surgery, I need to drive to Chicago tonight. Hit a gay bar. Find some twink to fuck. One with blonde hair. Yeah, that's it. That's what I need. Fuck Snyder and his cozying up to Mayer in the bed this morning. After this surgery, I get back on my game, damnit. That's the problem...I haven't had sex with anyone but myself in months. It's clouding my judgement...making me see something that's not there. Romantic feelings? Me? No. There's gotta be some doable gay men in this town besides my patient and his boyfriend. EXboyfriend. Hank. I'd even go a couple rounds with Hank. He must be gay, right? I mean, no respectable straight man would gesture that much right? And those shirts...
"Dr. Oliver?"
"Hmmm?"
He turned to find a nurse holding a sanitized towel out to him. "Right...thanks..."
With everything they blatantly disregarded about surgery here. I mean, apparently they usually don't shave patients' heads anymore (thanks rhiannonhero for that info), but, please correct me if I'm wrong, I think they still administer anesthesia in a mask over the face, and the surgeon wears a mask over his mouth and nose in the sterile OR, and a patient about to have surgery in the visual center in the back of his head will not be lying on his back. With EVERYTHING they disregarded about surgery here, did they HAVE to be sticklers on that one point and make Reid wear that HORRIBLE HORRIBLE THING ON HIS HEAD? They managed to find the one thing during his whole run on the show that even ESS can't look good in.

Actually it's an injection. A mask for gas would be used perhaps in some dental surgery, but not for putting people completely under, I don't think. But I'm not a medical expert at all, so I'm not sure. I know for my knee surgery, it was via injection in my IV.
But yes, realism and Oakdale were not good friends!

Re: anesthesia mask, I think it must depend. As I was saying somewhere above, for my 2003 emergency surgery they did put a mask over my face. I know for my daughter's tooth surgery, which was indeed general anesthesia, where she had a tube and everything, they also put a mask on her face (it had a "balloon" and she was instructed to blow up the balloon, and then she was out).
But for both of my later surgical procedures, it was injection into my IV.

Cool, I like knowing stuff like that. It's an amusing side effect of LuRe mania that I actually want to learn more about brain surgery. :)
