No-poo for me!

Feb 23, 2007 13:00

Today has been my first full poo-free day!   I stumbled upon this community sort of by accident, and I decided to go head first into the idea (pardon the pun, har har).   So, bad jokes aside, I think that this is going to be an interesting change and one that will take some will-power to get through.  My hair has always been board straight and ( Read more... )

It depended on the water I was showering in. I started nopoo whilst travelling, so when I was at home I had soft water and didn't have to wash nearly as much or use as much solution. And then when I went to band camp [yes, seriously] the water was wicked hard and I had to use much more BS solution, and then when I went to VT to visit family I ended up having to use less solution again. I BS washed my hair every 3 days or so, and ACV washed my hair about every other BS rinse. :]

Good luck! I had the worst time starting off the first time - I was doing everything wrong, basically - but the second time I gave it a shot it was totally worth it :]

Ditto on the water hardness. At home it less baking soda went further, but at my parents house (where I made most of my transition) I had to use more BS, then when I got home less again.

I started by washing every 3rd day, and then every 4th day. To some degree I had to just tough it out. I actually went almost 2 weeks without using anything but water when I was at my parents, since I didn't have to work and was only hanging out with good friends. After about 5 days it leveled out and only got a little waxier each day. But then I got the grey brush build up and washed it.

Now I go about 6-7 days between washing. I can wear it down for 3-4 days and then up for the last ones. My hair feels sooooo much softer. I love it. Also day 7 now is much less greesy/waxy than day 4 was when I first started. So have some patience and just stretch it out a little at a time.

Hart water will make a difference. I live in the desert and the well water has lots of minerals in it. When I did use BS, I had to use it every other day, and I had to use more then the recommended amount. When I went to Oregon to visit family,. I had to use less BS and I only had to wash my hair with it once every 3 days. I switched to a diluted castile soap rinse which works best for my hair. Now I wash my hair with the dilute castile soap solution once every 4 days. I rinse my hair once a day (due to allergies) with warm almost hot water ( ... )

What is castile soap? I've never heard anything about it.

Castile Soap is made with vegetable oils. The most common one is olive oil. Its real soap made by saponified fat. Basically you mix lye and oils together and they react in such a way that creates soap, glycerin and water. I have been using a very dilute solution made from water and http://www.drbronner.com/drb_sai_liquids.html
The castile soap has the added benifit of being a soap and conditioner in one.

I like Dr.Bronners stuff because its ph balanced so I dont have to worry about it hurting my hair. I still have to use ACV, it makes a big difference.

You will find that people on this community do no-poo in many different ways. Some people use clay, some castile (or other types of home made soap), some just water, some just ACV rinse, some use salt instead of BS, and some do it exactly like the info page says to do it. Play around with it and figure out what works best with your hair.

If you can handle it, wait until tomorrow morning before having another shower. The longer you can leave it between washings the better really. I wash with water-only every three or four days.

I wish that I could wait that long between water only washes. But my nose and eyes cant. If I dont rinse my hair every night then my eyes and nose act up all night and I cant sleep.

That's odd. I wonder what's in your environment that you are allergic to that collects in your hair? Hang out in any smokey environments?

Not smoke that would make my asthma act up too. Air born pollen can stick to hair but its easy to rinse out. My allergist wants me to wash my hair every day. Fat chance of that happening. I am down to washing it every 4 days I dont want to regress.
