Dying without Silicones

Hi. My name is Cthulhu Hungers, and I...am an addict. It's been 2 weeks since my last 'cone...

Anyway, there's been a couple of questions here on no-poo about hair dye, and whether or not you can dye and still be no-poo but most people here seem to be undyed. I dyed my hair Sunday night and wanted to share the method i worked out to dye and ( Read more... )

white vinegar, silicones (using them), olive oil treatment, castile soap, science of no 'poo, length-bra strap to tushie, hair types - curly, color treated hair, photographs of our hair, leave-in conditioners, oils, techniques, rinse recipes, testimonials

yay you have done my work for me! i also love to dye my hair with feria and was wondering about how i'm gonna go about it when it's time for my next dye...

I'm about 3 weeks poo free and other than the fact that my girlfriend says she can smell the vinegar faintly when I wash I'm very happy and she has no complaints about my hair. She loves my hair so I would be unhappy if my hair wasn't pleasing to her anymore.

What's your regular regimen right now? I'm trying to go WO or ACV only and as long as I can between washings of ACV but I have been WO pretty much every day. I have an AC... but we try not to run it and a lot of the time I'll just hop into a cold shower to cool off before bed. That and I work in a grooming salon and I need to wash the dog off of me and yes it can get in my hair.

so far, dr. bronners castile soap, AVC in a spray bottle for conditioner, and olive oil in a spray bottle for a leave in conditioner. I don't want to do BS because I understand it can change the color of your hair. and red hair dye is so prone to fading as it is. I wash about every week, which was as often as I was before no poo- my hair is really really dry. I mean really dry.

I love dr. bronners. it's cheap, strong, easy to get a hold of, and it's ingredients are apparently oil and MAGIC, because I've read the ingredient list and it's nothing but vegetable oils but it suds up and cleans just like soap.

Tell me about it! I also use a red from Feria, it looks fantastic but damn if it doesn't fade on me lol. I like the spray bottle idea though, I haven't used one, I just dumped some ACV on my hair and combed it out in the shower. Then Rinse and rinse and rinse...

I always had to wash daily. My hair isn't so dry except when I go way to long without cutting it, but the conditioning treatment is supposed to help keep the color bright. Do you think that the olive oil could help with that? I might pick up a spray bottle or two and give that a go.

Castille soap dries my skin out something horrible so I would be wary of using it on my hair. Even if it works differently on my hair, I'd be worried that my skin would be effected by it as it rinses out.

yeah, the red in mine fades after about 2 weeks, it sucks. hopefully the vinegar rince will prevent that. A lot of people in this comm seem to have the same issue you had with Dr. bronners, that it's too drying on their hair and too alkaline and if you need to use it it needs to be very dilute (i don't use a lot, sometimes I dilute, sometimes I don't ( ... )

I find Feria to be pure evil on my hair. It fries it, and makes it break off at the tips. I've switched to Sudina Henna, and while it's a pain to work with, it's made my hair so strong and shiny! The color holds fast with no fading, and when roots grow in it's not super obvious.

The first time I used it, people who've known me for years commented on how gorgeous my hair was, and strangers would give me compliments everywhere I went. I'll NEVER go back to box dyes. My hair is now almost waist length, and it's never been that long (or healthy) before.

I use a weak mix of BS for wash, and no rinse at all. I use coconut oil for a leave in conditioner after I towel dry, and I only brush my hair once it's completely dry. I may add another tiny touch of coconut oil just to smooth down the flyaways, but that's it.

I've always wanted to try henna, at least as a shampoo or conditioning rinse to maintain the color. The problem is that my natural hair is so dark that if I used henna it wouldn't show up. And I can't find any henna where I live.

(Nobody mentions my hair, good or bad. that's because all my friends are nerds and don't care about that stuff. :( )

you don't find that BS fades your color?

How dark is your natural color, exactly? I'm a medium ash brown, and Yemeni henna shows up in my hair as a fantastic dark red (like the model's hair on Feria Ruby Rush). Henna'd hair will appear very bright in sunlight, even if it doesn't look that bright indoors/at night. Plus, it's better for hair and scalp than chemical dyes. Betcha anything you wouldn't need so much olive oil if you switched to henna ( ... )

thanks for the information. I've been considering switching to henna for a while. (I'm also medium ash brown, and I'm looking for a lighter color than Ruby Rush.)

Is there any way to lighten hair without bleach? I know of honey but it's too time consuming for me. And that's really just bleaching because water + honey= hydrogen peroxide (bleach)
