Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars (or other bars too)

Nov 15, 2009 15:11

So I've been doing this no-poo business for almost 2 months, and things are cool. Not perfect or awesome, but good enough. I love the fact that it's cheap and natural. However my hair still gets greasy by the third day after the BS/acid rinse I do, and I wash every 3rd day ( Read more... )

scents, soap bars, dark hair, transitioning with a natural shampoo

I bought the Chagrin Valley bars to get my hair clean without the pain of mixing up stuff in the shower and to have the bonus of my hair still smelling nice ( ... )

have you looked at etsy? i just use the bs/vinegar routine myself, but lots of people sell shampoo bars and the like on there cheaply. it might be a good alternative.

I had heard that Etsy had shampoo bars, so i may check it out sometime. At least i definitely know CV has two bars i like. I was very nervous about buying them. My husband isn't fond of the whole bs and vinegar thing and said he missed my hair smelling nice, which is one reason i wanted to try bars. Nothing worse than living with someone who thinks you're kooky, lol. The longer we're together, the stranger i get, according to him. =)

Hey just wondering-- what 3 bars did you try, and which ones do you like/dislike?

I've been doing BS/ACV and for nicely scented hair I add some essential oil. Just a couple drops rubbed between my palms and through my wet hair helps to make it smell nice when dry (and better wet).

Like others have said, essential oils are great for adding a nice smell. I like to spritz with rose water or lavender water sometimes.

I won't use the acv/bs rinse because it strips the hair and scalp of oil and sends the signal to your brain that it needs to make more oil to replace what was lost. That defeats the purpose. Being greasy sucks, but hair has to detox at some point, including oil leveladjustment. When I first went no poo and detoxed, I'd do a "hot oil treatment" on my hair using coconut oil. I'd wet my hair, put on the warmed oil, then leave it on during my whole shower. I'd rinse it off last and do a good scalp cleaning with water. After a week of this it really improved, but I don't know if that's the only thing that helped since I changed my diet at the same time. I think it was both- the oil helped it adjust faster.

Good Luck!

I thought the whole purpose of everyone using the BS/ACV was that it *didn't* strip our hair and scalp like conventional shampoo/conditioner??

I guess it depends on what you mean by "cheating" :-) I am not familiar with this particular brand of shampoo bars, but lots of natural shampoos, bars and not, while are free from nasty crap and chemicals still have some kind of surfacants that strip the oil from hair. At least that is my understanding. I'm just as new as you to no-poo though, so I could be wrong.

But if it works for you and your hair, then go for it!

I had to use (white) vinegar with all the shampoo bars I've tried, and with the Chagrin Valley bars, I don't know if I got crappy bars or something but the very end of the bar didn't suds up barely at all.

Also, watch out ones with a lot of scent, even natural, because the last bar I tried (not chagrin valley) fried my scalp. I think it was rosemary and a few other herbs. I had to switch back to semi-conventional shampoo in order to get it to stop flaking, itching, and having essentially sores all over my head.

I really liked both the Mud & Clay bar and the Cafe Moreno (brunette) bar, and with the Mud & Clay, I could even skip a day between hair-washings. It was great. And then I tried for some local stuff and, well, fried my scalp, as I said.

Good luck!

Seconding the caution with the various shampoo/soap bars because people react differently; like how Cafe Moreno did not work at all for me lol.

I've never had to do a vinegar rinse with CV shampoo bars, except for the last one which I reacted to badly with rashes and stuff on my hand (it was actually a soap bar, but I use them for the hair too). Kind of switched to water-only afterwards, but I really miss the lushness and the smell!

Order multiple and email them to see if you can fit more samples into the flat-sized envelope. I got a lot of it just so I can save on shipping (I'm not located in the US so it's just international mail)
