Chagrin Valley Shampoo Bars (or other bars too)

So I've been doing this no-poo business for almost 2 months, and things are cool. Not perfect or awesome, but good enough. I love the fact that it's cheap and natural. However my hair still gets greasy by the third day after the BS/acid rinse I do, and I wash every 3rd day ( Read more... )

scents, soap bars, dark hair, transitioning with a natural shampoo

I bought the Chagrin Valley bars to get my hair clean without the pain of mixing up stuff in the shower and to have the bonus of my hair still smelling nice.

I really like them. I don't think it's cheating. I wash my hair and i rinse the soap out, and i don't have to put anything else in my hair. My hair is soft when it dries and i don't need anything extra, no vinegar or anything to help condition it. I recommend you get a variety of samples first, because i got three sample bars and i liked the first, i did NOT like the second one i tried, and this third one has done nicely for my hair as well.

I just wish that shipping wasn't so high. I want to buy more, as i am on my last sample bar, but i need to buy more than a bar or two to make the shipping worth it. For less than 6 dollars, they can ship up to $50 of merchandise, i believe it was, and if i am only buying a bar or two i feel like that's a waste. Hopefully soon, after the holidays i won't feel so guilty. I guess i'll have to go with a store-bought SLS-free shampoo after i am done with this bar til i can get more.

have you looked at etsy? i just use the bs/vinegar routine myself, but lots of people sell shampoo bars and the like on there cheaply. it might be a good alternative.

I had heard that Etsy had shampoo bars, so i may check it out sometime. At least i definitely know CV has two bars i like. I was very nervous about buying them. My husband isn't fond of the whole bs and vinegar thing and said he missed my hair smelling nice, which is one reason i wanted to try bars. Nothing worse than living with someone who thinks you're kooky, lol. The longer we're together, the stranger i get, according to him. =)

Hey just wondering-- what 3 bars did you try, and which ones do you like/dislike?

I tried the Chamomile and Citrus first, and i really liked it. Then i tried the Babassu and Marshmallow, and after 2 weeks of using it, my hair felt so nappy i actually washed it with Herbal Essences (i still has most of a bottle left over) and started over. I kept using it til it was gone (because i wasn't going to waste it) but the entire time til it was gone i'd wash with the shampoo bar, go 4-5 days, wash with Herbal Essences, go 2-3 days, back to the shampoo bar, and so forth. The third bar i am using now is the Mud and Clay, and it's nice. I like it.

Initially, when i first made my order for the bars, i honestly figured the Mud and Clay would be the one i didn't like. My hair is so baby-fine that i figured anything called 'Mud and Clay' would be far too heavy for my hair. But it was the Babassu and Marshmallow i couldn't stand. I loved the smell, but it just made my hair heavy and oily feeling.

Honestly, the whole package was the best-smelling thing i've ever gotten in the mail. I wonder what my mailman thought, i mean i could smell it all when i opened my mailbox, and he's kind of a gnarly old dude, so i wonder if he thought i was smelling up his truck or something, lmao. I think i sat here with the bars in front of me, periodically sniffing them for HOURS til my husband got home and i could show him my new awesome smelling eco-friendly shampoo. LOL

Wow that's nice that you don't need a rinse or anything-- I was expecting an acidic rinse to be necessary because of the whole soap/alkaline thing.

The shipping is what's holding me back as well. The sample size bars look like a good size for the price you pay, and I was planning to try sampling all of them until I decided which ones I loved most, but I am broke right now... and while I can justify spending under $3 for a large sample, I can't justify spending the $8 it'd be when you add shipping to the equation!!!

I haven't needed a rinse yet. The first couple of times i used one, i used a small dab of conditioner because my hair felt thick and i was afraid it would be hard to comb when i dried it. But i got brave on the third use and let it air dry and it was so easy to pull a comb through my hair, i was impressed.

I know, i think i paid 13-something for my order, and i got 3 sample bars! Ugh.

I got a Flat Rate box, for i think it was $5.70 shipping. I got three sample bars and they were all differently shaped/sized, so it's hard telling how many they can put in an envelope. I paid for the box because it seemed it might better hold up under mail strain. My mail people aren't too gentle with my books that often come in paper bag wrapping with shipping tape, so i thought a box was the best way not to get dinged-up soap, lol.
