I agree with you on the "lock out new comments." If the journal owner doesn't want the existing comments visible to the world, they could just screen them or delete them. This change represents a loss of functionality.

unfortunately, it's a loss of unintended "functionality."

i always hated the fact that when you disable comments, it deletes existing ones and you can never get them back even when you enable them again.

if that's happening, something's busted somewhere.

it shouldn't delete comments from an entry if you choose the "disable comments" function after an entry has received comments.

hm... well, since the last time i tried it, i've been afraid to do it again and that *was* over a year or two ago. but i lost a lot of comments i actually did want to keep and don't want it to happen again.

you could make an entry intended to test this, post some comments to the entry, edit the entry, disable comments, edit the entry, enable comments, and see what happens.

The S2 change is just changing behavior to what it should have been to begin with. I'm pretty sure it was an oversight that S2 layouts could choose to show comments on entries with disabled comments.

The situation you mentioned is something people may want, but the option "disable commenting" should not have different behaviors based on the layout you're using. It's confusing and unintuitive.

the situation i mentioned affects a couple entries that are in one of my communities.

i'm sure several others would like the functionality.

i suppose it'll be a lower priority if it becomes one. :\
