I'll have to recheck my statistics over the next few days, but back when I was doing all those stat-y things, recently created free accounts outnumbered recently created Sponsored+ accounts.
So I don't even think you're wrong in the context of only considering account creations.
I'd like to know what is the proportion of new s+ accounts that are switched back to free once oblivious people realize they have opted for a ad-sponsored account. You sure see that questions pops up a lot at Support.
When LJ implemented s+ accounts, all free accounts were switched. That means all inactive accounts and all accounts of those who don't know the difference.

Saying it was S+, if that was the most majority option selected (since it's the DEFAULT) upon new account creation, would be marketedly advantageous.

and i'm pretty sure that my test free accounts were still free when they switched over.
and all syndicated accounts are still free accounts.
that switch may have been a bug.
could you show me an example of an abandoned account that is s+?
