Hi-Fi

Well, our 5 year old Sony STR-DE545 AV Receiver died while I was away this trip. It's apparently common for the DSP board to die. The receiver still worked in direct analog mode, but that's all. You couldn't use the equalizer, surround modes, or the internal digital decoder. This is a pain as we use it for watching DVDs ( Read more... )

We went out yesterday and got an ONKYO TX-SR602(S) to replace it. It's more modern, does 7.1 channels, more surround modes etc. It integrates a bit better with the rest of our stuff, although the remote still doesn't like our TV and DVD player.

Ooh...looks snazzy! Rather unusual colour scheme, though. Is it really gold?

We got the Silver version to match the rest of our stuff. It was the only one they had, so we got the floor model. It was in good shape tho, brand new, and we got a good discount.

On the ONKYO page you can click 'silver' to see what ours looks like.

Looks nice ^.^ Personally I'm a DENON kitty but the onkyo stuff is apparently pretty good. Denon's DVD-Video/Audio/SACD player's are quite nice if you can find somewhere up there that stocks them (I can get them either at MTVSound or Eastern Hi-Fi here). Testdrove one in town and almost wet meself!

There are plenty of Hi-Fi stores around, Hamilton is bigger than PN ;)

We're not Hi-Fi snobs, we were looking at ONKYO/Yamaha, rather than Denon/Marantz/etc. Our system is very diverse, as I said eventually we'll upgrade other bits, for now it's fine. We have a hard time justifying what we spend on it already!

yeah - i wasn't test driving the denon stuff with a CD i'd burnt myself from a compressed source, so I don't know how it'd handle stuff like MP3 and AAC. I've been thinking about getting a part time job to save some dosh up and upgrade a little. My little technics setup is good for the PC, but I want some decent home theatre stuff for movies.

Would be good to see you sometime, maybe the weekend?

Yeah, well he might want it for spare parts too. However if you were going to chuck it, I'll have it! BTW, did you price getting it repaired? I would have thought it might be worthwhile, as it's a farily good amp.

Yeah, definitely! Might have to go go to Auckland though, so I'll let you know.
