Worldcon 75 hesitations

I am fighting a suspicion that I have made a mistake in thinking I should try a Worldcon - it seems suddenly so overwhelming, confusing and scary ( Read more... )

I have been so several Worldcons, and in cities where the membership was really large. There was plenty of interesting programming, and great stuff in the dealers' room. I also met numerous friends there, though it could get hard to find anyone, or get schedules to mesh for meet ups. So mostly I'd say, if you are interested in the program offerings, and the art show and dealers' room, you will have a good time. Especially if you don't mind crowds. (I would have gone if I could have afforded it. I really, really, really wanted to go--and then travel down from Helsinki to see Estonia!)

Yes, Helsinki + Tallinn would be a great combo, different historical periods on display.

I do dislike crowds and I have found the Worldcon page confusing - I cannot find the programming to make up my plans!

I have also reached the age when my access to "spoons" to spare depends very much on the moment. I think I would be more or less OK on a good day, but how can I be sure to take the trip on a good day?

Hm, if I could find money to take my younger son with me, then I could may-be manage better. But - to pay for day pass for him + the ferry to and from Helsinki WOULd still me an hefty sum for me.

Thank you for talking to me - it seems I HAVE been nudged toward ways to deal by having an exchange (it is strange how I seem to get stuck with a problem and just having someone to talk AT about the problem helps me )

are you going somewhere where you need to get a hotel, or is it within a day from you? in any case i'd say go with the caveat that you're absolutely free to just stop doing it and leave the moment you don't feel well about it?

like, if you go and have a good time, awesome, you've gotten yourself a worldcon. if you go and don't have a good time, crowds are overwhelming, the panels are boring, et cetera, you ditch it and hide in the hotel or in the nearest cafe with air conditioning and decent coffee, either until you feel better or until you go home, and not chew yourself out of it because you've made a honest attempt and you now know for sure you did not like it.

if you do go, i hope you have an awesome time. ::hugs::

I sometimes wonder am I an introvert or not, but I should not - an idea of feeling comfortable in a cafe (room full of strange people) is very alien to me. It CAN be a bit of childhood trauma - the middle aged Soviet waitresses and bufetsitsy were really scary creatures for a shy child and this child apparently still hides in me ( ... )
