Recommendations - replacement housing shells for Nintendo DS Lite?

Apr 25, 2009 11:15

I unforetunately got to experience the hinge problem firsthand the other day with daughter's NDSL (ironically after having read about others having had issues with it :/). The shell in question had already some slight marks and scuffs here and there on it already though, as it was a used NDSL her father got for her (at a discount price), so we ( Read more... )

This was a helpful link on my post about my son's broken hinge.

Ah, interesting read about the Shock cases. Slightly discouraging with the likelihood of incomplete parts though. I guess it might be best to go for an original shell after all.

Thank you! :)

What replacement shell did you settle for btw? Or did you go for the protective case approach instead?

And seems there's more tagging work to be done in the community as well!

Is the hinge flat out broken, or is it just the usual hairline crack?

My wife's had a hairline crack in hers since about a month after launch (she has an original polar white) - and it has never been a problem at all. She didn't even notice it until I examined it and pointed it out. The crack has not even grown in size. She's not exactly careful with that thing either; she's dropped it more than I'd like to remember (always with the lid closed, thankfully).

It's not just a crack, it's a definate split. Although daughter hasn't exactly been careful with hers at times either..

Hi there,

DealExtreme may have something you're looking for. They also sell the tools needed to unscrew the casing. Check this out (black shell) http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.7276

Hmm. Remains to be seen if it'd be a good deal after all then, with the tools needed and shipping cost for it all. But I think an original case, I've seen them charge about 300-500 sek in Swedish online stores, which should be about $35 to $60. The Shock cases are slightly less expensive though, from about 200 sek ($25) and up.

Thanks for the link :)

I got DS Armor. My hinge isn't broken, but it keeps it from bending all the way back, so I imagine it might help with broken hinges too.

The Nerf kind? So the NDSL can never be fully bent backwards, by how much?

And true, but it just bugs me knowing it is cracked.

No, it's not the Nerf one. It's hard plastic. It's kinda bulky and ugly, though. You know how you open the DS slightly bent and then you can push it can click open once more all the way? With the armor on, I can't push it all the way back. I never played with it all the way back so it doesn't bother me.

I think I usually play with it fully bent backwards though, the best viewing angle, as otherwise one has to sort of lean into it as one plays or change the angle of it by adjusting it in ones hands, as I can't get a good overview of both screens if not having it fully bent backwards.

So how do you manage that, doesn't it feel weird with the viewing angle(s)? :)
I wish I had some kind of degree measurement thing now though, to get a better estimate on how open the NDSL is when fully bent backwards, for easier comparison.

I ordered a housing from Deal Extreme(a $20 replacement, not an official one) and it worked great. Make sure you get the triwing screwdriver, but that and a small regular one is pretty much all you'll need. I kept my original buttons(so now my DS is kind of cool with the half pink and half black theme) and everything. The only problem I had with stuff not fitting together is with the original top(with the two screen DS logo) and a new top to the inner part of the top screen(where the speakers are). I didn't want to use the new one because it was just shiny plastic rather than a plastic shell over the color as with my original one(coral pink). And getting the L and R buttons back is a bit of a pain ( ... )

So there might be hope for someone like me in other words. I always manage to mess something up when assembling techy stuff though ;) Hmm, so then why those all new NDSL consoles are so cheap on that site, isn't a wonder if they too are not original?

Although, that guide has one error though, the speakers are placed backwards? I think I read someone warning about that at least on GBAtemp.net when I poked around there for advice. And eep, judging by comments overall to that set, one best be careful with those flat wires too!

Thank you for well wishes :)
