I unforetunately got to experience the hinge problem firsthand the other day with daughter's NDSL (ironically after having read about others having had issues with it :/). The shell in question had already some slight marks and scuffs here and there on it already though, as it was a used NDSL her father got for her (at a discount price), so we would have had to gotten a new shell sooner or later I guess. But still, broken hinge, grr!
Anyhow, I have some ponderations and questions regarding replacement shells overall, including original as well as non-original ones, that I'd really appreciate others sharing their experience and opinion on!
Since I am interested in applying a (home made) custom skin onto the housing shell (or a protective case), I ponder whether it might be a good idea to try out the
Shock housing shells for the Nintendo DS Lite. They don't have that DS logo on the top, making that surface all smooth, which is good if trying to apply a sticker in a smooth manner. But since it's not an original shell, it'd mean there'd be no protective cases around for it that'll fit. I've also spotted what seems to be an even more obscure replacement shell, the Nexilux replacement shell, which also seemed to have a smooth exterior.
However there is the Alumor protective cases, with a very smooth outer surface, that might fit the original NDSL cases a bit too snugly in fact according to some. They make the NDSL look like a new gadget almost, and they don't appear to be translucent like the protective crystal cases which is good if applying a skin/sticker that is slightly translucent in itself. Yet then I wouldn't be able to use a soft silicone protective case that I like so much (since it's only made for original NDSL shells).. :/
And then there's the fact that I wonder if I'll have the patience for replacing a housing shell, it looks like it's not really an easy procedure...
Housing Shell Replacement
-> Has anyone experience with non-original replacement housing shells OR overall experience with original replacement shells? Good or bad experiences? How difficult of a procedure?
Re-Assembly & Fragile Parts
-> Power switch that breaks during assembly, plastic remnants in holes etc - Are these issues one can have with original nintendo replacement housing shells too and not just non-original ones? Or should one simply grit ones teeth and buy a spare power switch, just in case?
Aluminium/plastic Protective Cases
-> Has anyone tried hard protective cases made out of alumnium/plastic like the Alumor ones for the NDSL? Good or bad experiences? How easy are they to remove?
