Book Rate Rules!

Heya. Really sorry to hear about all of this stuff!! Figure'd I"d offer some more free moving advice, though, from someone who made it from the east to the west coast on a post-grad school budget. The first key is book rate. U.S. Post Office Book rate. You just pack boxes with nothing but books, and lug them down to the closest post office, and tell them you want book rate shipping. It's very cheap, especially for the weight and bulk, and I've never lost a book. You can ship non-book stuff through the Post Office too, using Parcel Post. It's definitely more expensive than book rate, but a lot cheaper than UHaul.
The second key is huge moving sale. Craigslist. Sell everything you can bear to part with. Especially the bulky stuff. When you get to your new place you can just use the money to buy it all back from someone else having a moving sale!
If you do all of this right the rest of your stuff should fit in your car and you're good to go!
Good luck!! Hope that things start looking up soon -

Thanks! Unfortunately we can barely fit ourselves and the cats in our car... :} That and our small core of irreplaceable furniture is a bit big. But book rate may well be a very god thing for us...
I remember that. East to West is worse than West to East, since they have to pay people to drive vehicles back. I mailed what I could book rate. I suggest simply selling everything non-essential and trying to get furniture on this coast through freecycle.
I had a horrible time finding someone to dye mine purple, but the extra hassle and expense was worth it.
Hi, Sorry to hear things aren't going too well, but it's cool you're moving. Feel free to stay with me on your way if you want. I hope your medical stuff gets better. I'm getting a little sick of school, myself - I wish there was a way you could just check a box saying you learned as much as you wanted to and want to call it good. But then there's this all-or-nothing degree mentality thing... So good luck with everything!
If you do make it out to Oregon, it would be great to see you. It has been quite a while. U-Haul is quite expensive, and their trucks suck. Perhaps Penske? I did it with a moving company, and as long as the load is light and fairly compact, they are actually fairly cheap.
Anyway, good luck with things, I know the tightness of money issues.

Irrelevantly and possibly not at all helpfully, Lea Hernandes is doing grants for webcomics.
