Swinging London Town

Selectadisc no longer exists! I've obviously not been to Berwick Street for ages. However it has only been cosmetically replaced by - or possibly just rebranded as - something called Sister Ray. Anyway it is exactly the same inside and the reason I was there was to buy a single, something I've not done for a very long time. The single was Mogwai'sRead more... )

I was taking what had somewhat misleadingly been described as a shortcut that took me through the Barbican a few weeks ago - do they keep adding new bits to it to make it even more impossible to get out of? -- there seemed to be a graduation graduation ceremony going on that apparently consisted almost entirely of West African students and their parents - lovely to see a graduation ceremony where everyone was so obviously happy and enjoying themselves, unlike the usual ones you see here with grimacing students embarrassed by fathers in uncomfortable suits and mothers in nasty hats.

"do they keep adding new bits to it to make it even more impossible to get out of?"

No, but the entire structure is self-aware and able to reconfigure itself at will when it detects the presence of a "newcomer".

Speaking of Mogwai, would you want to see them live this year at the Albert Hall? Seating only as all of the standing tickets have sold out. :(

Yeah, that would be excellent. I was told the whole thing had sold out so seating is fine. Buy me a restricted view circle ticket the moment you read this.

Selectadisc no longer exists!

Never knew they even had a London branch; I automatically think of Nottingham as the home of Selectadisc, and I do hope they haven't gone under. A fine emporium.

Er... Sister Ray's been in Berwick St forever. http://www.sisterray.co.uk/
Next to the Music & Video Exchange, which last time I was there (2004) had expanded into the shopfront next door. Opposite where Ambient Soho used to be, but a few shopfronts towards Oxford St.
If it's now where Selectadisc used to be (another block or two towards Oxford St) then maybe it's just taken over the much bigger space that Selectadisc used to have.
I certainly went to Sister Ray when I first remember visiting London record stores properly in 1999.

There aren't any "blocks" in London, heathen. But yeah, it has eaten Selectadisc and made absolutely no changes apart from the name. It's funny that I don't remember Sister Ray: I used to do Berwick Street - Selectadisc, Reckless, Mr CD - at least twice a week between 1998 - 2001. Then again, anything south of Broadwick Street is for pornographers and grocers.
