Selectadisc no longer exists! I've obviously not been to Berwick Street for ages. However it has only been cosmetically replaced by - or possibly just rebranded as - something called Sister Ray. Anyway it is exactly the same inside and the reason I was there was to buy a single, something I've not done for a very long time. The single was
Mogwai's first ever single Friend Of The Night. It is great. Really looking forward to the album.
This reminds me that I went to see the 'Gwai at the ICA in
January. The support act, Uncle John And Whitelock, where bloody awful but the gig itself was a cracker. I'm slightly upset I didn't see them the night before since they played Ithica, my favourite tune and one I've never seen live. However Stuart Lesley Braithwaite HND himself declared it better than the night before and that's good enough for me.
I have seen Mogwai a lot of times. Possibly the only musician I've seen more times is Richard Thompson, who I went to see at the Barbican later in the month. Never been to the concert hall of the Barbican before, it's huge. Massive circle (I was told my tickets were in the stalls but its hard to argue about comps.) This could have been a bit daunting for a lone guitarist backed up with a double bass player - Danny Thompson, as per usual - and was certainly a change from the itimacy of the Lyric last year. Not a bit of it, they totally filled the space. Despite seeming more nervous than I've ever seen him and playing a set that hasn't changed much in a while it was a blinding gig with two long encores that were well deserved.
Last night I went to see Sam Shepard's
The Late Henry Moss at the Almeida. Never been to the Tony before either, it is titchy. The play itself is a good enough family drama but I missed the allegory about the US or whatever it was meant to be and I don't really see that the rave reviews were justified. But what to I know? My "only really one brother" reading was roundly mocked.
