I rather think that you could make the same point about all monumental public art, that it is more interesting in its subject than its execution - and intentionally so. At least this subject is rather more life-affirming than the warriors who mostly qualify for such memorials.

Yes, you are right. (I'm not sure why this is the case though, after all you wouldn't expect a portrait to simily be representational.) This is why I wish they'd gone for something less monumental. I'm not entirely sure about Schutte's birdhouse but it is trying to do something interesting with its location and its surroundings.
