My former barber is from Morroco, and he was telling me that Ramadan is observed as best you can. Folks with diabedes often have to skirt it. Children aren't expected to fast at all when they are young, and then more and more as they get older. I don't think it's till they are about in middle school that they even skip lunch.

Islam is a very cool religion and a has it's head on straight about a lot of things - so long as you actually read the damn book and understand what they were trying to get to. There are a lot of muslims who don't read the damn book, and believe what others tell them, and take it all way too far. It's just like any other religion, a bunch of zelots do stupid thins and make it worse for everyone.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that was the case - but man, some people dont deserve to live.

One of my coworkers was talking about it last year - I was curious, because she was eating and she had mentioned it the week before (otherwise I wouldn't have even known she was Muslim). She said that travelers and menstruating women are exempt from the fast.

There's a bunch of categories of exemptions. It's partly like the 'chain of authority' thing about whose-commentary-on-what you choose to subscribe to for various things. I think the Mullah was having a bit of an over-extension moment there.

It probably varies from sect to sect, but if I remember correctly, the very young, the sick and frail, and the very elderly were not expected to fast, nor were pregnant women. But as with any religion, you have extremists and the ignorant. But don't get me started ... I'm still trying to figure out why, if everything is part of God's plan ... where do pedophile rapist-serial killers fit in ? What part of God's plan requires a 2 month old infant to be raped and strangled ? Yes, you heard it, 2 months old ... it makes me want to vomit. Sorry, that's my rant of the day ...
