this wonderful art vespertila drew for me.
So, a little explanation,
vespertila wrote her version of Bruce and Dick’s first and second kiss for me
here and
here, and then we agreed that, while she’d have drawn the third, I’d have written it. So V. that’s for you!
Three makes the charm.
Bruce had thought that that was just an old saying but, as he was kissing Dick for the third time, he had to agree with that. They were on the rooftop of the Gotham City Police Department, with just the light of the half-broken Bat-signal to enlighten them. But Bruce could have sworn that they were in full sunlight. And it was true to him. He had his light in his own arms, right at that moment.
Dick was his light. He had always been, since the day Bruce had met that joyful boy full of grace, who had gotten under his skin with amazing easiness. Dick had become a part of Bruce’s life, a partner in his personal fight against crime, a basic wedge.
Bruce hadn’t realized it at the beginning (so much for being a great detective, he scolded himself), but Dick had changed him day by day, since his arrival.
Bruce’s dreams, or rather nightmares, had changed too. The same nightmare, every night, for only God knew how long, and then one night it had changed: while he kneeled down near the corpses of his parents, in the dark alley where they had found death, a light had spread out on him. It was a glorious light, the brightest Bruce had ever seen, and then he had noticed something into it, an undefined silhouette approaching. He couldn’t understand who or what it was, but when he woke up the next morning, Bruce wasn’t sweating nor panicking. He felt good and knew that, whoever or whatever was in that light, was there for him.
That silhouette belonged to Dick, of course. It was Dick coming for him, in his dream, to save him with his joy and his trust, his faith and…his love. Or perhaps the light was actually spreading out from Dick. But that didn’t make any difference as to what it meant.
Sometimes, Bruce believed that he had understood the identity of that mysterious silhouette from the first night the dream had changed, but that he had been too stubborn to admit it. He had to maintain his fierce mask of invulnerability and indifference to avoid other losses. It was easier that way.
No complications, no personal issues, no problems.
So simple.
So wrong.
Bruce deepened the kiss, savoring Dick’s mouth on his tongue. A moan from the first Boy Wonder told him that his partner was enjoining their kiss, too.
Bruce had learnt the lesson and would have never, ever allowed to be parted from Dick.
He had discovered his mistake when Dick had left the Manor and his Robin identity. Bruce had kept as cold as steel even when Dick had tried to change his mind with a last, desperate attempt: he had kissed Bruce on the lips for the first time, gathering all of his courage to show his true feelings to his mentor.
And that kiss had left a mark in Bruce, indeed. It had showed him a tiny glimpse of how it could have been like, if he’d had decided to drop the mask that kept him apart from the world. That kiss had been the first breach in a wall that Bruce had believed invulnerable. And the loss of Dick’s presence by his side had made the rest.
Later, when Dick had returned to him, Bruce had been aware of loving him but still too afraid for acknowledging it. Yet the presence of his first partner had made things better: Dick’s voice, his smile, his jokes were like a healing balsam for Bruce’s wounded and tormented heart. His light had come back. Dick was again by his side, where he belonged to.
But, just watching at him had become plain torture to Bruce; he had started to wonder how would have been to touch Dick’s sculptured body and taste his lips or what Dick’s reaction would have been, if he’d have ever declared his love to him. Bruce was afraid to be rejected.
Sure, Dick had never had a doubt about Bruce and had returned to him everytime that his mentor had tried to push him away. But had the young man really forgiven him for that day? Bruce had never had the nerve to ask that question to Dick ‘till that night, when he had acted on it.
They were talking in the Bat Cave - or better Dick was talking to him, because Bruce couldn’t help but watching him, thinking to how much important that young man had become to him. So, when Dick has noticed that Bruce wasn’t paying attention to him, without a word, Bruce has reached for him and kissed him fully on the lips, giving all of his fears away.
At first Dick was so surprised that failed to react. But then he has joined the kiss and kissed him back.
That moment was soon broken by the appearance of the Bat-signal up in the sky.
Bruce swore under his breath.
“Seems like I have to go” he apologized. He had a silly smile plastered over his lips, that matched Dick’s one. “You’d better wait for me here or I won’t be able to focus” he said, before leaving for the Batmobile.
Dick nodded, flashing him one of his smiles.
Those smiles that were the light of his life, Bruce thought.
Batman rode the streets of Gotham with a renewed spirit, and quickly discovered that the call was a fake. He contacted Gordon on his way, and the Commissioner assured him he hadn’t ordered to light the signal on.
It had to be a trap, Batman thought, telling Gordon that he would have taken care of the matter by himself.
And so he did. It was quick and easy. The Joker had thought to strike Batman as soon as the latter had come to answer the call, by putting a clown-like bomb near the signal where the Caped Crusader used to land with his jump line. A silly plan, just to state that he was back on the stand. Batman discovered the engine, but the bomb exploded before he had time to deal with it.
While he was checking out for possible damages to the building (he had warned Gordon to evacuate it, just for precaution), he felt a presence behind him. When he turned, for a short moment, Bruce believed that he was living his dream again: the light of the crashed bat-signal pointed in his direction and a very familiar silhouette was approaching him, Dick in his Nightwing costume. Lately Bruce had noticed how that outfit accented the perfection of his partner’s body, and that thing had distracted him a couple of times.
“Nightwing” he greeted, trying to conceal what he was thinking about, “Why are you here?” he asked.
Dick seemed to be ill at ease:
“I heard there was an explosion, and I came to see if you needed any help” he answered.
“You have always been a very bad liar” Batman remarked, “Come on, why are you here?” he asked again.
“I… er… you haven’t second thoughts about what happened in the cave, have you?” he said at last.
Bruce grinned, shaking his head:
“No, I haven’t. Now that I have come to terms with my feelings, I won’t take them back” he stated.
Dick relaxed and smiled:
“So… you love me…” he whispered as he was afraid of saying it aloud.
His mentor opened his arms:
“Come here, if you can’t believe it” he offered.
In the blink of an eye Dick was in his arms, kissing him with a passion that Bruce didn’t think he had felt in the cave, maybe because of Dick’s wonder. The young man slid his tongue inside Bruce’s mouth, eager to savor it, as a starving man.
And here they were, still laced up in the kiss. Dick lowered the Batman’s cowl and, in the ardor of the moment, he raised his right thigh to encircle him. In response, Bruce removed his Nightwing’s mask, caressed his face and sustained his position resting one hand on the first Boy Wonder’s perfect bottom. They fitted so well in each other. Kissing and touching Dick felt like the most natural thing in the world - not to mention the hottest - and made Bruce feel complete.
He had made the right choice, and had caught the sunshine that had tried so hard to reach him.
A man can’t live in shadows forever.
