Disney Princesses aren't just bad influence, they're sexist writing. Or something to that effect.

It was requested and I'm about to leave for Finland for the next thirty hours or so. This might be edited and unlocked after that. Please note that my familiarity with the actual theory is weak; I've just read a lot of analysis from the angle and should probably not be talking about it, but it might at least make for an amusing read? The other key component of Ghibli movies being able to end on a bittersweet, morally ambiguous note (I think Mononoke was the more glaring example of this). And once that hurdle's been cleared, a storyteller is liberated to tie up loose ends anyway they please, or not tie them at all (again, Mononoke).

Treasure Island? Pretty much Jim and Silver (and the Doctor to a lesser degree) mattered as coming-of-age symbols.

If Disney's inability to treat women as individuals is connected to their commercial concerns about following conventions in their storytelling, it just became twice as depressing :/

Agreed on all counts... Mulan was the best of the Disney princesses, and she wasn't even a princess. The fact that they try to make her into one in all their marketing lessens the interest I might've had in her.

I really hate the princess trend...

Mulan might have been a second-rate movie compared to a lot of others Disney has done, but I absolutely adore it because Mulan herself is such a change from their general trend. That sequel does not exist in my world.

For some reason, at first I read it as "that which ruins families and turns women into raging FURRIES." Then I realized it said furies, not furries. But if people starting fearing that feminism will turn women into furries, that would be hilarious.

Well. I've seen feminism blamed for everything from boys falling behind in school to Islamic terrorism. I'm sure you can find the source of furdom in that pesky female emancipation, too.
