Hey, Esperanto? That's pretty interesting sounding. Didn't know you knew it!

It does sound like you've got a busy schedule. Hopefully the Daiso work will give you a big income boost.

Seriously the only volunteering I did consistently was at a food pantry at my church in the states. I always felt good doing it. But if it's the kind of thing where people are just asking favors then you've got to draw the line somewhere. They might not even realize they're asking too much. Or, they know they're being a pest, but they're too lazy to do it themselves. I find that some people take advantage of others but that's not always the case.

you've heard of Esperanto...? i've been speaking/learning it since 2003. :)

re: being asked favors, it has nothing to do with my volunteer job at the RSPCA. i mean, the RSPCA does frequently request extra hours from its volunteers, but it's such an impersonal request that i have no problem saying no 98% of the time. the hard part is when it's your friends who ask favors of you. :/

for half a year i did a fellow Esperantist a favor in taking up a volunteer position on the Board of Directors of a national Esperanto association and ever since then various people/friends (all Esperantists) have been asking me to help with this or that. they're all well meaning people certainly, and i know they aren't consciously trying to take advantage of me... but yeah, sometimes i feel like they're asking a bit too much of me. if they were just acquaintances, it'd be so much easier to say no with a clear conscious. ;(

I majored in English and minored in Japanese, which I think qualifies me as some kind of language nerd... I do know what Esperanto is but I don't speak it or know any words for that matter. I thought that it was kind of a made-up language people designed using words/grammar taken from various other languages some time ago as a potential common language... but nobody picked up on it and it just became an underground thing? Or was it always an underground thing?

It is kind of hard to turn down friends... but it seems like if they were your friends they would understand that it's not cool to do that.

I didn't know you did freelancing on the side.
I know how you feel. I'm so busy, too! It's crazy! :(

And maybe you're the same as me. I have a job that pays the bills. The other jobs I'm doing because I want to! And I'd rather just focus on those, but they won't pay the bills. *sigh*

Ganbarimashou!
