bought a new bike sunday after much debating over whether i should or not. i'd been wanting a new bike for months and the main thing that had been stopping me was not knowing how much longer i'd even be in Japan for. that hasn't changed-- i still don't know for how much longer i'll be here, but i decided to go ahead and get one anyway. my old one

i have a question already! do you know JR's (or atleast JR East's?) rules for bringing bikes on trains...?

It's fine to do it on any non-crowded train at any time as long as you put it in a bag like this (輪行袋). They are kind of expensive, you can also use an old zipper futon cover as a cheap alternative. If your bike doesn't fit try detaching the basket, seat, handlebars and perhaps the wheels. Wheels last because they might not make the bike much smaller with those sweet fenders you got.
