Chocolate chip cookies is an American invention for sure. ;)

Fried chicken is a fave for me.

Apple pie is often cited and I love blueberry. But ~ PIE!!

Hot dogs. Baked beans.Coleslaw.

One friend of mine was miffed at their home stay buying a giant jar of penut butter, but I thought it was cute & it's true -- we like it! XD

Potato chips were also an American invention.

I LOVE a good sandwich, especially turkey.

My mom's meatloaf is a fave.

Lentil or barley soup I enjoy a lot.

Some people really dig a jello salad. *shrugs*

Oh, pizza, spaghetti, tacos. Popular with americans like bbq, although not quite American I suppose.

We actually invented ice cream and granola bars! Worchestershire Sauce too. XD

We invented Twinkies, Oreo Cookies, fortune cookies (and a few other Chinese dishes).

Pancakes, waffles, pound cake, green salad, potato salad, lots of good vegetarian alternatives are popular now too (Boca Burger, etc)!

Corn flakes! They were invented in Battle Creek, MI. Not that cereal is amazing or anything, but it's pretty cool I guess.

cereal... the likes of Muesli aside, have to be one of the most American traditions ever. D; <3

I'm not American, but here are some foods other than hamburgers that I associate with the US anyway. :p ( ... )

Have you ever thought about doing non-traditional American foods, like alligator, venison and buffalo?

I did that with my kids (although it was meant to be more as a "shock" than anything else).

i hadn`t thought about that... but yeah, now that you mention it, America does eat a lot of meat that others may consider strange lol.... snake, squirrel, etc. those type of things always strike me more as regional dishes, not really "American" American since even many Americans would be like ?!?!?! to some of them. :x

that in and of itself, though, could make for a really interesting discussion with my students, though... D; good idea.

what about some more snacks? popcorn and cotton candy seem pretty American to me -- though maybe they're also quite common in Japan..? i dunno.

i could contribute a few ideas for Canadian foods :P but maybe your American foods don't want to share the spotlight with things from north of the border! :o
