At Dave's Ignore-the-Superbowl Party, sheenaqotj duped me and some other chumps into playing bughouse again. I enjoy chess, and I admire the simplicity of the new rules that bughouse introduces. I'm sure Sheena will chime in here, too, but from flirting with bughouse a few years ago, they really are very different games. If you watch Sheena on FICS sometime, you'll see there's a pretty insane partner dynamic in there, too, which doesn't come out in these social games as much. Speed chess will get you some things, but you basically need to able to identify positions where you can strike killing blows with an arbitrary piece.. then you need to be able to get your opponent in that position, and have the piece available (the latter being the fun partner interaction of "need knight!", etc.). It's fairly different.

as of something like last year the lounge started playing bughouse; one thing to encourage new people to play (the drop-mate can be really really disheartening) is that we play with house rules that specifically disallows that...

it's not quite as fun without clocks (just simply because there's no longer a penalty for stalling) but it's still fun nonetheless.
