Harry Potter and Helen Palmer!
Harry Potter and I have a long history. I came to them somewhat belatedly as an adult, but remember vividly reading the Goblet of Fire when I worked in London. As the list below shows, I read them to Markus between probably end of 2016, through to July 2019. Dates below are date when finished reading.
He has learnt to read english just be listening and reading along! In the beginning, he struggled with listening for a chapter, remember the characters, keeping hold of the plot. By book 3, he really understood how the storyline worked and amazed my by explaining the timeturner plot to me. The deal was, we read the book, then watched the film.
We had a gap between Books 3 & 4, since in my opinion, the story gets darker from the Goblet of Fire. And we often had to decide between us if he wanted to know if a main character was going to die. But I completely forgot about Dobby in book 7, which threw us both!
I really enjoyed slowing down to re-read these books and to read them outloud to him. I really enjoyed the episodic rhythm. I enjoyed the time alone with Markus, snuggled up, reading together, discussing the plot, discussing people's actions and their behaviour and their emotions. As a parent, reading ot my first born, the emotions of the story often caught up with me, in a way that they had never done before. And Markus got very good at knowing when I was struggling. Our catchphrase was, "It's okay, it's only a book".
The emotion of reading and finishing the last book and saying Goodbye to Harry, was also linked of course to saying Goodbye to this precious time with Markus. It was wonderful and I am so glad I did it. Patrick of course has absolutely no interest in reading this with me!
