30 Days of Film - Day Eighteen

Aug 29, 2010 01:11

After yesterday's litany of woe, today has been better. In fact, it's been pretty good. Most of the day was spent tidying the house and packing, which was pretty boring and then I broke the hoover. The plastic handle bit snapped. My uncle randomly happened to be delivering furniture to next door, and he stopped by to say good bye. Then my aunt came with a set of scales she had bought me. And then my nan invited over for dinner. And then I went to see Scott Pilgrim. Ok, I lied, today has been *very* good.

After today I'm gonna have to put this on hiatus until I get broadband in my flat, and I don't know how long that's going to take. Whilst I do have the internet on my phone, it's not really conducive to writing long and involved posts. But as soon as I get connected to the tubes I'll carry on because it's been so much fun writing about all these films

• Day 18 - A movie that you wish more people would’ve seen

Hmm... toughie. I wish more people had seen Tuff Turf (1985), Bright Young Things (2003), The Abominable Doctor Phibes (1971), Secretary (2002) and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)

But my pick is:

I Love You Phillip Morris (2009)

Why? Well because it's an indie film that somehow managed to end up with two a-listers in the cast. Because when Jim Carrey isn't being "madcap" I really like him and I think he's a good actor (love The Truman Show and Liar Liar). He's rather like Robin Williams that way. Because Ewan McGegor. Because it's based on a true story. Because it's great to have a film about gay characters that isn't about the fact that they are gay. Because no one in America would touch it for distribution because of Teh Gay. And it took forever to be released over here as well.  Seriously, it premiered at the Sundance festival in January of 2009 but wasn't released in Britain till March this year. The internet tells me it is being released in the USA in December. Hopefully.
It is just such a brilliant film. Sweet, funny, heartbreaking. For those of you who don't know, it's about Steven Russel (Carrey) a man who is happily married (and having secret gay sex in motels) until a car crash makes him realise he can't pretend anymore so he decides to leave his wife and go and live the life he wants. This costs a lot of money, so he becomes a con man to make up for it. He is caught and whilst in prison he meets and falls in love with Phillip Morris (McGregor). When Phillip is released, Steven repeatedly attempts to escape to be with him. Parts of it make me awwwwwwww so much. Admittedly, Jim Carrey and sex were two things my brain didn't really need linking and Ewan McGregor as a blond is odd but grew on me, although the... Georgia (I think) accent was weird.
But other than that I just kind of want to hug this film all over.
When I went to see it at the cinema with plum177 , the audience was kind of split between those people who had come to see it expecting a mad Jim Carrey film and those who actually knew what the film was about. Which led to one of the funniest overheard phrases as we walked out, which was one guy's opinion of what the film needed: "more funny, less bumming."  There was also one point (a scene with Phillip and Stephen dancing together in their cell) where a girl very loudly awwed at it. Not that I heard, I was too busy melting into a pile of mush.
So, yeah, it's just a sweet little film that deserves a bigger audience.

Incidentally, whilst I was looking for the above picture I found this:

Which threw me for a loop a little because I found myself thinking "Jim Carrey looks hot in that picture" which is not a thought I'm used to having. Is it just me? Also Ewan's hair is FLOOOOOOOFY!!!!
