I'm so confused what the complaint was even about.

I'd guess this mom didn't want her presumably white kids to read about a black hero, and probably didn't want kids of color to have a non-white hero.

Though I've also seen some white parents who claim that books about POC dealing with racism are actually racist, because racism ended with the Civil Rights movement, i.e. it didn't affect them, so it didn't affect anyone else.
