Seems like a year-end tradition to give book/movie/tv/whatever recommendations, so here goes, with links to GoodReads. Books read in 2018, not necessarily published in 2018. All read free through my library's Overdrive system.

The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells: Series of novellas starting with All Systems Red. Here's the summary for that one ( Read more... )

#2, books, #3, #8, #10, #9

Both Cat Sebastian and the Wayward Children have been recommended to me. After reading your comments, I might have to give it a try.

If you want to try Cat Sebastian, I recommend starting with The Soldier's Scoundrel, Unmasked by the Marquess, or It Takes Two to Tumble. They're first books in different series, and the last one is the first one in the series I mentioned here.

The Wayward Children books have earned several awards, including the Hugo and Nebula. They're darkish fantasy, sometimes delving into horror depending on which door a child went though. The fourth one comes out next month, and is also a prequel story.

Thanks, will do. I'm looking for new m/m authors to read. No offence but I am beginning to get tired of buying m/m ebooks and discovering the writing is juvenile or it badly needs editing.

I liked Joanna Chambers' series. It's not very romantic but the restraint and even realism of being a homosexual in that time period appealed to me. Haven't read that stand-alone novel yet.

re.Wayward Children: good to know. It sounds like the author twisted the idea of being able to go to another world into something darker and less pleasant.

Now that authors can self-publish, there's stuff you have to pay for that's not as well edited as your average fanfic you can read for free.

Are you on GoodReads? I use the app on my Kindle, and it lets me keep track of what I've read, but also what I'd like to read. A lot of popular authors are active there too, and you can follow them to not only see when they have new stuff out, but see what they're reading. I've found a lot of good recommendations that way.
