O Beautiful for Spacious Skies

Did you read Obama's speech? Did you? The first presidential election I remember was the 1972 contest between Nixon and McGovern. I don't remember the actual politics, but years later, when I was a teenager and babysitting the kids of my former babysitter, she told me that she, in 1972, had been amazed that I could explain how the Electoral College ( Read more... )

I love your second through fourth paragraphs. That's exactly how I feel. I know a few people who wonder why I still want to fly the flag, why I only buy flag postage stamps, and why I hum patriotic songs from time to time. Yes, I can love my country even if I think basically everything our leader has done in 8 years is wrong.

I don't think my crocus is out of the bulb, yet, though. I just couldn't bear it if I let myself hope this election would work out and it didn't, so I'm holding myself completely still and waiting for the other shoe. But then, I've never been much of an optimist.

I hope you're feeling better? I'm sorry the procedure wasn't very informative. I hope it all works out ok. (Sorry, I was reading my flist from most recent back, and saw this post first.)

Voting as a sacrament is a really beautiful piece of imagery. That being said, I was really impressed with Obama's speech.

Nene, thanks so much for sharing!! Embarrassing as it is to admit, I've never been interested in politics (I'm a pretty ignorant person in general), but I definitely found the speech (and your post!!) very inspiring.

I am very glad to have read this...! There is a lot for me to think about, because I've always felt so detached from the issues this country. (Maybe it's because of my ethnic background, maybe it's just selfishness/apathy.) But yeah, I suppose this ties with Ki's comment to your other post on personality change and "self improvement." ;P (And speaking of which, I'd love to hear your personal opinion on that topic as well!!)
