I went to a workplace LYS* here in NYC called "Gotta Knit" to pick up some #5 needles for a gift I am making. I wanted bamboo or plastic, as the yarn is a nylon blend and quite slippery

Not sure if I have what you need... but I can take a look. I've got a ton of needles that I don't use much any more. My wrist problems make it too hard for me to knit anymore. I know I probably have DPNs not sure about circs...
I can bring what I have when I come see you for the dumplings, if you'd like.
If you can wait a few days, http://elann.com">Elann has Clover bamboo circs down to size 3s. They're reliable, and they ship *fast* - I got my last order in less than a week without paying extra postage.
I'm a Denise knitter, too, and the Clovers have a similar feel to me - smooth, but not so slippery I'm afraid of losing my yarn.
I'm not a fan of Magic Loop, personally, because I find it more ungainly than knitting on DPNs and it encourages ladders where I pull the loop out. But I've been using the two-circulars method (as developed by Cat Bordhi, and described (a href="http://www.az.com/~andrade/knit/twocirculars.html">here for a while, and find it really easy and virtually ladder-free.
Thanks, I didn't knwo Elann stocked needles. I am not in a rush in any sense, it was more idle curiosity and for the fun of going to an LYS ;) But now I know!!!
A nifty fact about Elann: If you have an account there (i.e., if you've ever placed an order) and someone gives you an Elann gift certificate, it's really easy to redeem - just log in, place an order and when you're ready to check out the form will ask if you want to apply your gift certificate to your order. I just got 15 balls of their Peruvian Baby Silk for a whopping 70 cents that way. (-:
Is this "Gotta Knit" on 6th Avenue between 12th and 14th somewhere? If so, I went in there ONCE and never returned because of the snotty attitude. I asked if they stocked any acryllic yarns, and the woman looked at me as though I'd just shat on her floor, and said, "No, we don't carry such low-quality yarn." I said, "Well, that's a shame since I'm trying to make a blanket for a friend who is having a baby, and I wanted to give her something WASHABLE for when the baby spit up on it. But I guess your store isn't able to provide me with service." And I walked out.
Yes, I get that acryllic yarn isn't as nice as Alpaca or silk. But if I ask you for acryllic, you can simply say you don't have it. You don't have to be snide. Sheesh.
Once I checked out a new yarn shop in Brooklyn and, while I was in the store, a fight broke out between a proprietor and a customer. Over pattern difficulty (as in, judging). It's a weird, yarn-y world out there. I really like Seaport Yarns, on William St. The selection cannot be beat.
Why am I not surprised? They are really nice about questions, problems, whatever (I'm outside the US as well, and they are indeed highly accommodating). Plus their shop is like a strange fantasy I never knew I had, an entire office suite overrun with YARN!!!

Or you can ask why you want acrylic, and then offer a washable yarn.
