I went to a workplace LYS* here in NYC called "Gotta Knit" to pick up some #5 needles for a gift I am making. I wanted bamboo or plastic, as the yarn is a nylon blend and quite slippery.
I've been thinking about doing a pair of sleep socks at some point (I have permanantly cold toes) and asked about smaller than size 6 circulars in bamboo as I find metal too slippery.
"A lot of NEW KNITTERS find metal too slippery," said the sales person. She repeated this phrase almost every time I mentioned a preference of mine regarding needles (I like Denise's usually) - or anything else.
Look lady, I may be new to your store, but your assumption that I'm a NEW KNITTER, said in a snide tone, with a bit of a sigh when I make conversation with you, doesn't endear me to either you, or your poorly stocked store. What I am is a NEW CUSTOMER. I won't become an OLD ONE because of your attitude.
As for the rest:
Not a lot of stock, either needles or yarn. *yawn*
So, when I gotta knit, I won't be going to "Gotta Knit". I still want some sock yarn and some small circs though, and I will likely suck it up and get metal ones - somewhere else! I dislike using DPNs and I want to try the "magic loop" technique.
