Tattoo Artist Help

A friend's gorgeous tattoo work reminded me that I need to ask my flist a question!

So, I have this AMAZING tattoo I want to get for my 40th. I'm happy to wait on a wait list. Ideally I'd like to have a female tattoo artist because the thing I want to get is a copy of a Maria Sibylla Merian drawing.

I love it! Where are you thinking of getting it?

If you're willing to travel to DC, I highly recommend Cynthia Rudzis who did most of my colour work including my art nouveau nightshade flowers--that looks like it would be right up her alley. Her former apprentice Liaa Walters, who is now a full tattoo artist in her own right and still works with Cyn, also likes doing botanical tattoos.

I like Cynthia's stuff, but I think Liaa may be too.... rockabilly? Vintage? for my taste.

if you want to/can/are planning to coming to the west coast, I would recommend talking to Shannon Archuleta:

i've got to think there's someone in the NY area for this, though! i'm not familiar with NY-based artists.

Too far! Especially for back work!

SHANNON ARCHULETA. She's the only person I let tattoo my mom, and she's the only person I will ever be tattooed by again. If it's on your body for the rest of your life, it's worth a plane trip.

Since it's going to be a big back piece, it's going to be a lot more than a single plane trip. The work is beautiful, but even going to DC multiple times is going to be a stretch. I have a kid too, and I'm not comfortable leaving him for several weekends over X number of months for a tattoo. Even if it's going to be on my body for the rest of my life.

One of redbird's tattoos is floral; she might have photographs of it, so you could see her artist's work.

Not female, but what about Anil Gupta, who does renaissance miniatures on people.

Holy crap, his stuff is amazing @.@

Very impressed. I wonder how the minatures age. I can't imagine well... but I want a whole backpiece. Thanks!

M completely beat me to mentioning him.

FWIW, if you want to see how his stuff ages, you could head over to Lucky 13 -- all of Melody's ink is by him, and some of them have to be at least a decade old by now.

Ha, thanks. I'm not planning on getting a minature, so I think it may be less of an issue for me :)

www.vyvyn.com has two artists who sprang to mind for me, though the west coast may be a bit further than you were hoping to go for this.
