A friend's gorgeous tattoo work reminded me that I need to ask my flist a question!
So, I have this AMAZING tattoo I want to get for my 40th. I'm happy to wait on a wait list. Ideally I'd like to have a female tattoo artist because the thing I want to get is a copy of a Maria Sibylla Merian drawing.
Who was Ms.Merian? A scientist, explorer, and artist from the age of enlightenment, who left her husband when she was 55 to study the insects and butterflies of Surinam accompanied by her 20 year old daughter. She had an amazing life and incredible eye. Her drawings were so accurate that they are STILL used today to ID insects and plants, and she is the first person to have shown the entire life cycle of a plant in one image (a technique still used in every biology textbook ever). She is barely remembered by science history, and she is my favorite scientist.
Plus, pomegranates are a thing for me since childhood. I saw this image at the Rare Book LIbrary at Harvard the first time, and knew what I wanted it for.
The question is - who can do it? It's got to be someone with good botanical technique. So far, the one or two artists I've reached out to were not interested because they have enough work that lets them just do their own thing, which I get is a LOT more fufilling than copying a work.
At the same time.... this is a really important thing to me, and I don't want an apprentice, or someone who isn't interested in botanical stuff at all. I want it bold, beautiful, and well done.
Recommendations appreciated. Feel free to forward this post to anyone you think might have a good connection.
