Yet Another Reason to Avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup

Study finds mercury in HFCS.

I already avoid it.

Since the effects of mercury poisoning (in particular on fetuses and children) include cognitive thinking, memory, attention, language, and fine motor and visual spatial skills, I wonder at the rise of ADHD and it's connection to what we eat, and when we eat it ( Read more... )

Yeah. I have my own theories about environmental influences and neurological disorders and learning disabilities. :/ Also, drugs given in pregnancy/labor.

I don't tend to talk about them though because I'm not a scientist and it's total armchair/laywoman hypothetical stuff!!! :)

I'm always interested in what *actual* scientists are looking at though!

I've pretty well reached the point that I'm terrified of any food that I can't readily identify all ingredients of, and which doesn't fit at least somewhat well into the whole foods end of the spectrum somewhere. It seems to me that by so industrializing our food sources, we've long ago crossed that line of, "Just because we can doesn't mean we should." Every day that we learn something new, I wonder what the next thing is that we're going to learn, and how far down the road it will be before we learn it.

Needless to say, I'm glad that I eliminated HFCS a couple of years before hearing about this. :)

Oh me too! My mom teases me for eating organic, but I'm like, "Um Mom? I just like to eat food that I can name what the food IS."

Eat food. Mostly plants. Not too much.

Thank you Michael Pollan for summing it all up!

Heh. After hearing about the mercury news and sharing it with my coworker this morning, I convinced her she needed to read "In Defense of Food" post haste. I'm loaning it to her tomorrow.

Michael Pollan for Secretary of Agriculture NOW!

Yeah... I was disappointed with the pic for Sec of Ag. *is sad*

Even if it wasn't Pollan, I'd prefer someone closer to his sensibility. Sunstainability isn't just about windmills, but how we eat too.

Interesting. Good to know although, like you, that's something I've been avoiding for years.

It's so frustrating because it seems like the bad news just never ends.
