Indie Theaters?

So apparently I was the last to know Pioneer Theater closed down on the 31st. I can't act like I'm so distraught it's gone, cause I probably could've supported them more had I known they were getting priced out. Still, it was an awesome place to see indie films whenever I was bored and needed something cool to do ( Read more... )

Oh, and I love Sunshine (http://www.landmarktheatres.com/market/NewYork/SunshineCinema.htm) on Houston, between 2nd and 1st ave if memory serves me correctly. I highly recommend the documentary Man on Wire, it's great, I *think* it's still playing there.

And of course there's The Angelica, also on Houston one block west of Broadway (http://angelikafilmcenter.com/), and there's the Film Forum on 209 W Houston St (www.filmforum.com).

And there are at least three others that spring to mind, but damnit if their names aren't slipping...
there's one on 2nd Ave and 2nd Street, I've seen a bunch of films there, can't recall the name...Film Anthology?

Also, don't rule out MoMA, the Japan Society and other museums. They all, for the most part, show films. Info on their respective websites.

ack!

I keep remembering stuff. If you like film festivals, be sure to check out the Asian Film Festival, the Bike Film Festival (I have yet to go, as I've had to work every weekend, but the reviews are a lot of fun), the Coney Island Film Festival, TriBeCa (yeah, a no brainer) and...others. ack. Once again, my memory now slips.

It's hard going back to work after so many days off. *sigh*

UGH - I loathe the Lincoln Plaza Cinema on Bway and 64th - awful small rooms with uncomfortable seats and the worst staff in NYC. I will go almost anywhere else before going there. The patrons are obnoxious as well, it's like they have never been in a movie theatre before - hi, it's not your living room, shut up. They are worse than the teenagers in Times Square.

The Angelika is a favorite of mine (even though half the people I know hate it because in some theaters you can feel the train passing by -- I think its part of the charm).
